Picture this: You’re juggling work, family, and personal responsibilities, still find yourself lying awake at night, replaying worries or regrets. Many of my clients, ranging from young professionals to retirees, share similar stories. In our sessions, I often draw from both psychology and the rich traditions of Indian philosophy. These ancient teachings, surprisingly, hold answers to many of the challenges we face today. In this blog, I’ll show you how these ideas can help you find clarity and peace, no matter your stage of life.
Why Our Minds Struggle Today
Modern life brings constant pressures, career demands, family expectations, health concerns, and sometimes the fear of “what’s next.” It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure about the future. These struggles aren’t new. Indian scriptures like the Bhagavad Gita, Vedanta, and Buddhist philosophy have addressed such issues for centuries, offering guidance on how to navigate life’s uncertainties.
Ancient Teachings Meet Modern Psychology
What’s fascinating is how closely Indian philosophy and psychology align. Vedanta, for instance, teaches that much of our suffering comes from identifying too closely with our worries, our bodies, or our egos. Psychology echoes this, showing that self-awareness and acceptance can deal with anxiety and improve well-being.
कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन।
मा कर्मफलहेतुर्भूर्मा ते सङ्गोऽस्त्वकर्मणि॥
Karmaṇy-evādhikāras te mā phaleṣhu kadāchana,
Mā karma-phala-hetur bhūr mā te saṅgo ‘stv akarmaṇi.
One of the famous teachings of The Bhagavad Gita is ‘Focus on the actions without obsessing over the results.’ A message that’s just as relevant today, whether you’re facing a tough decision at work or dealing with family conflicts. Sometimes people misunderstand this as not thinking about the consequences at all, which is not the case. What this means is, it’s important to think about the consequences of your actions, take a calculated risk, and once decided, FOCUS on the actions. When we blend these teachings within modern lifestyle through counselling, we get a holistic approach that respects our roots and addresses today’s realities.
Bringing Wisdom into Daily Life
Here are some simple ways to apply these teachings to your everyday challenges:
- Pause and Notice: When stress rises, take a moment to breathe and observe your thoughts. Are you worrying about things beyond your control?
- Act Without Fear: Like the Gita says, do your best in each situation, but don’t let fear of the outcome paralyze you. Whether it’s a career move or a family decision, focus on what you can do right now.
- Accept Your Feelings: It’s natural to feel anxious, sad, or unsure at times. Instead of pushing these feelings away, try to understand what they’re telling you.
- Be Kind to Yourself: Life doesn’t always go as planned. Treat yourself with the same compassion you’d offer a friend.
- Reach Out for Support: If you find it hard to cope alone, remember that talking to a professional can offer new perspectives and practical solutions.
